Welcome to the Canine Locomotion Center!

At our Canine Locomotion Center, we prioritize the health and well-being of your four-legged companions above all else. Specializing in the precise diagnosis and customized treatment of orthopedic conditions in dogs, our mission is to enhance the lives of your beloved pets through cutting-edge technology and advanced medical procedures. Discover how we can guide your dog toward a healthier, pain-free life.

We harness innovative IMU sensors (Inertial Measurement Units) to conduct motion analyses that surpass conventional approaches. Our research has demonstrated that IMU sensors offer a cost-effective and precise alternative to traditional gait analysis in dogs. Dive into our detailed research to explore our groundbreaking findings.

Canine Functional Orthopaedics

Our approach to functional orthopaedics considers the dog as a whole. We analyze not only structural aspects but also the functionality of joints, muscles, and other critical components of the musculoskeletal system. The aim is not only to alleviate pain but also to enhance your dog’s quality of life and performance. Explore how our holistic perspective contributes to promoting your dog’s health.

Mobil Gait Analysis with IMU

This study aims to investigate two simple algorithms for extracting gait features from an inertial measurement unit (IMU) based canine gait analysis system. The first algorithm was developed to determine the hip/shoulder extension/flexion range of motion. The second algorithm automatically determines the stance and swing phase per leg. To investigate the accuracy of the algorithms, two dogs were walked on a treadmill and measured simultaneously with an IMU system, an optical tracking system and two cameras. The range of motion estimation was compared to the optical tracking systems, with a total of 280 steps recorded. To test the stance and swing phase detection, a total of 63 steps were manually annotated in the video recordings and compared with the output of the algorithm.

The IMU’s-based estimation of the range of motion showed an average deviation of 1.4° to 5.6° from the optical reference, while the average deviation in the detection of the beginning and end of the stance and swing phases ranged from -0.01 to 0.09 s. This study shows that even simple algorithms can extract relevant information from inertial measurements that are comparable to results from more complex approaches. However, additional studies including a wider subject pool need to be conducted to investigate the significance of the presented findings.

Radiological assessment of X-ray images and videos

We understand that radiological images and videos often raise questions. The professional assessment of these recordings requires a thorough examination and comprehensive evaluation. We explain why it is crucial to interpret X-rays and videos always within the context of a comprehensive structural and functional orthopedic examination. This ensures accurate diagnosis and the development of effective treatment plans.

The aim of functional orthopaedics

Functional orthopaedics describes orthopaedic disease / limp / lameness by the following parameters:

  • Altered action/position of joint or limb, skeletal system.
  • Altered range of motion of the skeletal structures
  • Altered or non-physiological position of the limb or spine.
  • Altered function of musculature, ligaments and tendons
  • Description of the movement features/kinematics by LupoGait®.

Our Mission: Revealing the Altered Dynamics of Muscles, Tendons, Ligaments, Joints, Bones, and the Spine

At the core of our mission is the unveiling of the nuanced changes in muscle activity, tendon and ligament function, joint mobility, bone health, and spinal integrity. This comprehensive approach serves two pivotal purposes:

Firstly, it enables us to initiate tailored therapeutic interventions, addressing the root causes of orthopedic issues. Secondly, it allows us to precisely define the duration and parameters of rehabilitation and recovery.

Our ultimate objective is to expedite the return of your canine companion to a life free from orthopedic discomfort, where walking, running, and fulfilling its essential role can be achieved with ease.
